Fans Revisit Yharnam on Bloodborne's 10th Anniversary Amid Sequel Hopes

Today marks the 10th anniversary of Bloodborne, and fans are commemorating the occasion with another "Return to Yharnam" community event. FromSoftware's PlayStation 4 masterpiece, which launched on March 24, 2015, solidified the Japanese developer's reputation as one of the industry's elite. The game received widespread critical and commercial acclaim, leading many to anticipate a sequel akin to the Dark Souls series. However, a decade later, there has been no follow-up, remaster, or even a next-gen update to bring Bloodborne to 60fps. This silence from Sony has left fans puzzled and eager for more.

PlayEarlier this year, Shuhei Yoshida, a PlayStation legend who has since left Sony, offered his perspective on the situation during an interview with Kinda Funny Games. Yoshida emphasized that his thoughts were purely speculative and not based on insider knowledge. He explained, "Bloodborne has always been the most asked thing... And people wonder why we haven’t really done anything, even an update or a remaster. Should be easy, right? The company is known for doing so many remasters, right, some people get frustrated." Yoshida theorized that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware, is deeply attached to Bloodborne and may not want anyone else to work on it due to his busy schedule with other successful projects. "I think he is interested, but he’s so successful and he’s so busy, so he doesn’t want, he cannot do himself, but he does not want anyone else to touch it. So that’s my theory. And the PlayStation team respect his wish. So that’s my guess, right? Theory. I am not revealing any secret information, to be clear."

Miyazaki's success spans the influential Dark Souls series and the mainstream hit Elden Ring, which has led to a multiplayer spin-off. Since Bloodborne, Miyazaki has directed Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring, keeping him occupied with multiple projects and company management. Miyazaki often sidesteps questions about Bloodborne, noting that FromSoftware does not own the IP. However, he has acknowledged that the game could benefit from a release on more modern hardware.

In the absence of official updates, modders have attempted to enhance the Bloodborne experience. Notable efforts include a 60fps mod by Lance McDonald, which was met with a takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment years after its release. Similarly, Lilith Walther, creator of Nightmare Kart and a Bloodborne PSX demake, faced copyright claims. Recently, fans achieved a breakthrough with PS4 emulators, enabling Bloodborne to be played in 60fps on PC, as showcased by Digital Foundry. This development prompted speculation about Sony's response, though the company has yet to comment.

With no official updates in sight, Bloodborne fans are taking matters into their own hands with community events like "Return to Yharnam." Today's event encourages players to start new characters, summon cooperators and invaders, and leave in-game messages signaling their participation. As fans continue to celebrate and engage with the game, the future of Bloodborne remains uncertain, leaving these community-driven initiatives as a testament to the game's enduring legacy.
