Esports Revolution: Chess Joins the Virtual Arena
Chess Makes its Esports Debut at the 2025 Esports World Cup
The 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC), the world's premier gaming and esports festival, has made a surprising addition to its lineup: chess! This ancient game joins the ranks of esports, a move driven by a significant partnership between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF). This collaboration aims to introduce the classic strategy game to a wider, more modern audience.
Chess Takes Center Stage
EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert expressed his excitement, calling chess "the ultimate strategy game." He believes its rich history, global appeal, and vibrant competitive scene make it a perfect fit for the EWC's mission to unite diverse gaming communities.
World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a new generation of fans. He stated, "I'm thrilled to see chess alongside the world's biggest games at the Esports World Cup. This partnership offers a fantastic opportunity to grow the game and inspire future players."
Riyadh Hosts the Historic Event
The EWC will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025. Top chess players will compete for a substantial $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), with the top 12 players from February and May tournaments, plus four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," vying for a $300,000 prize pool and a place in the EWC.
To engage a broader esports audience, the 2025 CCT will feature a faster-paced format: 10-minute games with no increment, and Armageddon tiebreakers.
Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has evolved through generations. Its digital adaptation, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, has broadened its appeal, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The rise of streaming, influencers, and shows like The Queen's Gambit have further popularized the game. Its official recognition as an esport promises to attract even more players and fans.
