New First-Party PlayStation Game Will Reportedly Be Inspired by Smash Bros

Summary

  • A PlayStation studio has taken over development of Bungie's mysterious MOBA, codenamed "Gummy Bears."
  • Unlike typical MOBAs, Gummy Bears reportedly uses a percentage-based damage system similar to Super Smash Bros., impacting knockback rather than directly reducing health.
  • The game, in development since at least 2020, aims for a younger audience than previous Bungie titles and features a unique, "cozy and vibrant" aesthetic.

A new report sheds light on Gummy Bears, a PlayStation first-party MOBA title initially developed by Bungie. Initially revealed in August 2023, the game's development took an unexpected turn following Bungie's 2024 layoffs, which saw 155 employees transition to Sony Interactive Entertainment.

This transition resulted in the formation of a new PlayStation studio, now leading Gummy Bears' development. While the release date remains distant, the game's unique mechanics are starting to surface. Instead of traditional health bars, Gummy Bears employs a percentage-based damage system, mirroring the knockback mechanics of Super Smash Bros. Higher damage percentages lead to more forceful knockbacks, potentially even knocking characters off the map.

The game will feature three standard MOBA character classes: Attack, Defense, and Support, along with multiple game modes. Its art style is described as cozy, vibrant, and "lo-fi," a departure from Bungie's previous work, aiming to attract a younger demographic.

Gummy Bears has been in development since at least 2020, initially at Bungie and now at the newly established PlayStation studio. The game's unique mechanics and art style suggest a distinct identity, setting it apart from Bungie's previous titles and potentially expanding PlayStation's audience reach.
