Spike Chunsoft: Careful Growth in the West

Danganronpa Devs Hope to Explore Other Genres While Catering to Core FanbaseKnown for titles like Danganronpa and the Zero Escape series, Spike Chunsoft is charting a cautious course into new genres. In a recent interview at BitSummit Drift, CEO Yasuhiro Iizuka outlined the studio's strategy.

"Our strength lies in content related to Japan's niche subcultures and anime," Iizuka stated. "Adventure games have been our focus, but we aim to broaden our horizons by incorporating other genres."

Expansion in the Western market will be gradual and deliberate. "We won't drastically change our content," Iizuka clarified. He believes venturing into genres like FPS or fighting games prematurely would be a misstep.

While famous for its anime-style narrative games, Spike Chunsoft's portfolio is diverse. They've dabbled in sports (Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games), fighting (Jump Force), and wrestling (Fire Pro Wrestling), and have also published Western titles in Japan, including Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, Cyberpunk 2077 (PS4), and the Witcher series.
