Sucker Punch, the developers behind Ghost of Yōtei, explain their decision to set the game in Hokkaido. Discover how they're recreating Japan's northernmost island and insights from their research trips to Japan.
Ghost of Yōtei's Hokkaido Setting
Authentic Representation of Real-World Locations
Ghost of Yōtei brings real Japanese locations to life, with Ezo (modern Hokkaido) serving as the primary setting. In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Sucker Punch Game Director Nate Fox revealed why they selected Hokkaido for protagonist Atsu's journey.
Authentic recreation is familiar territory for Sucker Punch, having meticulously brought Tsushima Island to life in their first Ghost game. Their work earned praise from Japanese critics and recognition from Tsushima's local government - Fox and Creative Director Jason Connell were named ambassadors for their cultural portrayal.
In 2021, Tsushima Mayor Naoki Hitakatsu commended their achievement: "Many Japanese don't know Genko-era history, and globally Tsushima remains unknown. We're grateful for their stunning visual representation and deep storytelling."
The team maintains this respectful approach for Ghost of Yōtei, aiming for "authenticity and believability in our fictional narrative." Hokkaido was chosen because in 1603 it was "stunningly beautiful yet marked Japan's frontier." Fox notes this dramatic setting perfectly complements Atsu's revenge tale and her evolving reputation.
Where Beauty Meets Peril
Fox described two research trips to Japan as highlights of development. Their visit to Shiretoko National Park particularly stood out, where breathtaking landscapes coexist with wildlife dangers.
"This harmony of natural splendor and inherent danger - precisely the atmosphere we sought for our game," Fox explained. "That moment confirmed Hokkaido was the ideal setting."
The team also visited Mt. Yōtei, sacred to Hokkaido's indigenous Ainu people as "Machineshir" (Female Mountain). This landmark symbolizes both Hokkaido and Atsu's personal losses.
Fox emphasized how local interactions enriched their understanding, helping capture Hokkaido's essence while acknowledging cultural learning curves. More details will emerge about their approach to respectful representation.
As Sucker Punch's most ambitious project to date, Ghost of Yōtei launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Stay tuned for further updates as development progresses.
