Development Started After X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge
Kevin Edwards, a former developer at Genepool Software, took to Twitter (X) to unveil never-before-seen images of a canceled Iron Man game intended for release in 2003. The game, titled "The Invincible Iron Man," was meant to pay homage to the character's classic comic book moniker. Edwards worked on this project shortly after the release of Genepool Software's previous superhero title, X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge.
Edwards shared the game’s title card, Genepool Software’s logo, and several gameplay screenshots. He followed up with gameplay footage from the original Xbox, showcasing the game’s startup screen and a brief tutorial set in a rocky desert environment.
"The Invincible Iron Man" Was Canned by Activision
Despite the enthusiasm from Edwards and the fanbase, "The Invincible Iron Man" was canceled by Activision just months after development began. The closure of Genepool Software followed soon after, leaving Edwards and his team jobless.
Activision never officially disclosed the reasons for the cancellation, but Edwards speculated on possible causes in response to comments on his post. He mentioned that the delay of the Iron Man film could have been a factor, or perhaps Activision felt the game did not meet their standards and chose not to fund it further. Another possibility he mentioned was that another developer might have been lined up to take over the project.
Commenters also noted the unique character design of Tony Stark, which differed significantly from the modern Iron Man popularized by Robert Downey Jr. in the MCU. The game's design was closer to the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book run from the early 2000s. Edwards admitted he was unsure why this particular design was chosen, stating it was a decision made by the game's designers.
Although Edwards promised to share more gameplay footage, he has yet to do so at the time of writing.
