Avowed Director Aims to Expand on the Established Universe
Potential for Expansions or Sequels

Avowed has enjoyed a strong reception, with Microsoft and Obsidian reportedly pleased by its sales performance. In a February 22, 2025 interview with Bloomberg, Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the possibility of additional content or a follow-up title.
While Obsidian hasn't officially confirmed any future projects, Patel expressed a strong desire to continue directing and creating new experiences. She shared enthusiasm for potential expansions or a sequel, stating, "Having built this rich universe and developed our team’s expertise in crafting content and gameplay within it, I’d love to explore further opportunities to expand on this foundation."
Development Evolution of Avowed

Avowed's development journey involved significant challenges and transformations before reaching its final form. Patel described the process as complex but ultimately rewarding, with the team finding its direction through persistent iteration.
Development commenced in 2018 as Obsidian prepared for acquisition, despite previous successes with titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. The studio faced unique challenges as an independent developer before Microsoft's 2020 acquisition and subsequent game announcement. During development, the team made strategic decisions to scale back certain features, including multiplayer functionality. A major restructuring occurred in January 2021 with a leadership change and project reboot.
Patel discussed the complexities of managing a team exceeding 80 developers. "Typically, when reevaluating creative direction and developing new prototypes, you'd work with a much smaller team," she explained. Under her guidance, the team prioritized narrative depth and lore from the Pillars of Eternity universe, transitioning from an open world to focused zones that allowed for richer environmental design.
Reflecting on the development process, Patel noted, "I've observed this pattern across every project I've worked on – initial chaos gradually gives way to cohesion and clarity as the vision solidifies."
Obsidian Explores Pillars of Eternity Tactics Concept

With the Pillars of Eternity franchise revitalized through Avowed, Obsidian is considering a tactical spin-off. During a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, franchise director Josh Sawyer revealed internal interest in developing a tactics-based game.
"A Pillars tactics game is something many players and developers would support," Sawyer commented. "The challenge lies in determining the appropriate scope – team size, visual fidelity, and overall scale." Previous reports have indicated developer interest in a tactics adaptation, and with renewed franchise visibility from Avowed's success, this concept may eventually materialize.
Despite this interest, Sawyer remains committed to his vision for Pillars of Eternity 3, though he acknowledges the need for a budget comparable to Baldur's Gate 3's $100 million – substantially more than what was available for Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
