"Witcher 4 Faces Delays Due to Unreal Engine Issues"

Daniel Vavra, the visionary behind the Kingdom Come trilogy and a co-founder of Warhorse Studios, has openly criticized Unreal Engine for its limitations in handling complex and expansive open worlds. He attributes the production challenges faced by The Witcher 4 to these shortcomings.

"Unreal Engine excels in environments like deserts and rocks, but it struggled with rendering trees for an extended period," Vavra remarked. He further criticized Unreal's Nanite technology, stating it falls short in creating realistic vegetation.

According to a CD Projekt employee Vavra spoke with, scenes that ran smoothly on the RED Engine have caused significant delays on Unreal Engine, contributing to what's been described as production hell for the game.

Vavra questions the decision of studios, like CD Projekt, to switch from their proprietary engines—such as the well-regarded RED Engine—to Unreal Engine for open-world games. He argues that most successful open-world games rely on custom engines tailored to their specific needs.

While acknowledging Unreal Engine's capability to deliver stunning visuals, Vavra points out its high system requirements, suggesting that it demands PCs costing thousands of euros, which are beyond the reach of many gamers.
