$1.4M Nintendo Switch 2 stolen in GameStop heist
Around 3,000 Nintendo Switch 2 units were stolen during transport from Nintendo of America's headquarters to a Texas GameStop location, according to authorities. The theft occurred while the shipment was en route through Colorado, with police estimating the stolen consoles' value at approximately $1.4 million as reported by Denver 7.
Law enforcement officials face challenges in their investigation, as they haven't pinpointed the exact location where the theft occurred along the extensive 1,332-mile delivery route. Investigators are examining whether this was a carefully orchestrated heist targeting the high-value shipment or an opportunistic crime. The methodical removal of multiple pallets containing Switch 2 units suggests the perpetrators had some level of planning and organization.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of the Switch 2's successful global launch earlier this month, which saw 3.5 million units sold within its first few days. While Nintendo has largely avoided supply chain issues that plagued previous console launches, such thefts undoubtedly strain distribution efforts.
Video game hardware theft remains an ongoing issue in the industry. The PlayStation 5 launch in 2020 witnessed similar incidents in the UK, where organized groups employed dangerous "rollover" techniques to intercept shipments in transit. Historical patterns show Nintendo products frequently targeted as well, including a notable 2015 theft involving Splatoon game copies and rare amiibo figures. This marks another public relations challenge for GameStop, which recently made headlines for damaging Switch 2 units during launch events by improperly attaching receipts to console screens. The retail chain continues facing criticism for its handling of high-profile gaming product releases.
