The Largest Character Roster in Series History

Sega and Sonic Team are collaborating on the newest entry in the kart racing series, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, which promises to feature the most extensive character lineup to date. In a PlayStation.Blog post dated February 12, 2025, Sega of America Associate PR Manager Thalia Piedra unveiled the innovative mechanics and features players can expect.

Piedra confirmed that the game will include "iconic characters from both the Sonic and Sega universes," though the initial trailer primarily showcases Sonic franchise characters. The official website mentions 23 launch characters with more planned for future updates, though the complete roster remains unconfirmed.

The reveal trailer features series mainstays Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy, alongside Sonic Riders characters Jet, Wave, and Storm. Zavok and Zazz from the Deadly Six make an appearance, alongside Team Dark members Shadow, Rouge, and E-123 Omega. Dr. Eggman appears with his creations Egg Pawn and Metal Sonic, while the Chaotix crew (Vector, Charmy, and Espio) also join the fray. The lineup is completed by Blaze, Silver, Cream, and Big.

Travel Rings Transport Racers Between Dynamic CrossWorlds

The latest trailer and PlayStation.Blog post introduce groundbreaking gameplay mechanics that will delight longtime fans and newcomers alike. The standout feature involves Travel Rings that instantly transport racers between different worlds mid-race, creating exhilarating transitions between diverse environments known as CrossWorlds.

According to Piedra, these rings "create dramatic race-changing moments, instantly moving players from one world to an entirely new location." Each CrossWorld delivers a theme park-inspired experience filled with surprises around every corner, including "massive creatures, interactive obstacles, and breathtaking scenic tracks."

The game also introduces dynamic track systems that evolve during gameplay, drawing inspiration from previous series titles like Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Tracks transform with each lap, requiring players to constantly adapt their strategies. Players will have access to 24 primary tracks and 15 distinct CrossWorlds to explore.

Enhanced Customization, Extreme Gear, Gadgets, and Beyond

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds promises the most comprehensive vehicle customization system in the series. The official Twitter (X) account shared a preview on February 17, 2025, demonstrating extensive modification options including front and rear vehicle components, wheels, deep color customization for bodywork, tires, cockpit, and glow effects.

Additionally, players can equip their characters with customizable Gadgets to optimize their racing style, featuring 23 different power-up items. The game includes 45 unique vehicle designs, including the return of Extreme Gear from Sonic Riders. These flying hoverboards enable boost-focused racing mechanics that add fresh excitement to the gameplay experience.

With these innovative and returning features, Sonic Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka describes the game as "the ultimate culmination of everything we've learned from the Sonic Racing series so far."

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Closed Network Test Details

Registration Now Open for Closed Network Test

A special closed network test will give selected players an early look at the game's features. Registration opened on February 12, 2025 and remains available until February 19, 2025.
The testing period will run globally from February 21, 2025 through February 24, 2025.
