Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: Addressing a Turbulent Launch
The highly anticipated release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 experienced a challenging launch, marked by server instability, bugs, and widespread player frustration. Jorg Neumann, head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Sebastian Wloch, CEO of Asobo Studio, addressed these issues in a YouTube video.
Unexpected Demand Overwhelms Servers
Neumann and Wloch explained that while they anticipated high player interest, the sheer volume of users significantly exceeded their projections, overwhelming the game's server infrastructure. The initial login process, which involves retrieving data from a database, proved particularly vulnerable. While the system had been stress-tested with 200,000 simulated users, the actual player count far surpassed this, leading to server crashes and extended loading times.
Login Queues, Missing Content, and Negative Feedback
Attempts to mitigate the problems by increasing queue capacity and server processing power provided only temporary relief. The team discovered that server saturation caused repeated service restarts, resulting in exceptionally long loading screens frequently freezing at 97%. Furthermore, reports of missing aircraft and other game content stemmed from incomplete data retrieval due to the overloaded servers.
The negative player response on Steam, where the game received a "Mostly Negative" rating, reflects the severity of these launch issues. However, the developers assure players that they are actively working to resolve the underlying problems.
Ongoing Efforts and Apology
The developers have stated that the critical issues have been addressed and that player access is now being managed at a more sustainable rate. A formal apology was issued, acknowledging the inconvenience caused and expressing gratitude for player patience and feedback. The team promises continued updates via their social media channels, forums, and website.
