"Dune: Awakening Devs Detail Sandworm Mechanics"
In *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms will function as an untamable natural force, distinct from the mechanics described in Frank Herbert's novels. Unlike the books where characters can summon sandworms using a thumper, this feature won't be available in the game. Sandworms are designed as NPCs with predetermined patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors integrated into the game engine. Players cannot intentionally summon a sandworm near an enemy's base to cause chaos. However, if a sandworm is in the vicinity, players might attract its attention by moving through the sand or using a thumper, though these actions don't guarantee the worm's presence in the area.

Riding sandworms, a hallmark of the Freman culture in Herbert's works and the Dune cinematic universe, will not be included in *Dune: Awakening*. The developers have cited pressure from the filmmakers behind the Dune movies as the reason for this omission. However, there's a possibility that future post-launch patches might introduce more elements of Freman culture, potentially including the iconic worm-riding mechanic. For now, though, there's no assurance that players will get to partake in this thrilling activity.
*Dune: Awakening* is set to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow later.
