Disney Unveils Exciting Changes for Parks Fans
Disneyland and Walt Disney World are overhauling their Genie+ ride reservation system, effective July 2024. This significant update addresses guest concerns regarding the current system's limitations.
The revamped system, now called "Lightning Lane Multi Pass," allows for advance booking. Guests staying at a Disney resort can reserve Lightning Lanes up to seven days prior to arrival; other guests can book up to three days ahead. Individual Lightning Lane reservations will be known as "Lightning Lane Single Pass." This pre-planning capability mirrors aspects of the former FastPass+ system, offering a more streamlined vacation experience.
The current Genie+ system, introduced in 2021 as a paid replacement for the complimentary FastPass system, has drawn criticism for its same-day booking requirement. The new Lightning Lane Multi Pass aims to alleviate this frustration by letting guests plan their park visits more effectively. The number of reservable Lightning Lanes per guest will also increase.
The Virtual Queue system, used for attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and TRON Lightcycle / Run, will remain unchanged, allowing guests two virtual queue bookings per day. This system will also be used at Disneyland for Haunted Mansion Holiday upon its reopening.
While Walt Disney World will experience the full range of changes, Disneyland will primarily see the name change, retaining the existing booking and redemption process. All attractions currently using Genie+ will transition to the Lightning Lane Multi Pass system, including the upcoming Tiana's Bayou Adventure (opening June 28th at Disney World).
Disney's decision to implement these changes suggests a response to guest feedback. The ability to pre-book Lightning Lane reservations should prove particularly beneficial during peak seasons and special events, especially considering Disneyland's discounted summer tickets and the new attractions opening at both parks. The long-term success of these changes remains to be seen.
