M3GAN 2.0 Doomed as Digital Release Arrives Early
The box office disappointment M3GAN 2.0 is now available digitally as of today, July 15th, following a brief three-week theatrical run. Concurrently, reports confirm that Blumhouse has implemented a round of layoffs.
M3GAN 2.0 earned $10.2 million domestically and a mere $6.96 million internationally during its opening weekend, indicating the first M3GAN film from December 2022 might have been a unique phenomenon, given its final global earnings of $180 million.
IGN's review of M3GAN 2.0 scored it a 6/10, stating: "M3GAN 2.0 trades horror for sci-fi and action with inconsistent results, but M3GAN's delightfully wicked humor and impressive dance moves ensure she remains the star, not the new genres."
M3GAN herself took to social media to announce the digital release, posting: "They said this version of me was too much for theaters. Do with that what you will." The digital version launched on July 15th, with a physical release scheduled for September 23rd.
So far, M3GAN 2.0 has generated a modest global total of $36,496,600 during its time in theaters, according to Box Office Mojo. This comprises $22,446,600 from domestic markets and only $14,050,000 from international markets.

In related news, Blumhouse has laid off six employees across its film, television, and casting departments, as reported by Deadline. The outlet noted that Blumhouse, which employs roughly 100 people, let go of junior-level executives and support staff. However, Deadline emphasized that none of the affected executives worked on M3GAN 2.0.
Earlier this month, Blumhouse head Jason Blum addressed the film's underwhelming release, acknowledging several missteps. Speaking on the latest episode of The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast to share his initial reactions, Blum admitted, "I’ve been in pain all weekend, thinking about this far too much."
"We viewed M3GAN as a Superman-like figure," he explained. "We believed we could do anything with her. We could switch genres, release her in the summer, alter her appearance, or even transform her from a villain to a hero. We fundamentally overestimated the strength of the audience's connection to her.
"We made the choice to change genres. The audience wasn't prepared for that shift. They simply wanted more of M3GAN exactly as she was."
This refers to M3GAN 2.0 shifting from a thriller-horror, like its predecessor, toward an action-comedy style. This change clearly did not resonate. Blumhouse's next release, Five Nights at Freddy's 2, is scheduled for December.
