"BG3 Patch 7 Unleashes Over a Million Mods Post-Launch"
Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 7 has finally been released, sparking an overwhelming response from the player community, especially with the influx of mods.
BG3 Modding Is “Pretty Big” Says CEO Swen Vincke
Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7, launched over the past few days, has elicited a tremendous reaction from the gaming community. Just after Patch 7 went live on September 5, more than one million mods were installed, as announced by Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke. "Modding is pretty big - we had more than a million mods installed in less than 24 hours," Vincke shared on Twitter (X). Further amplifying the excitement, ModDB and mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reported that the number of installs has exceeded 3 million and is still growing, stating, "Just ticked over 3m installs and accelerating," in response to Vincke's announcement.
Patch 7 introduced a variety of new content, including new evil endings, enhanced split-screen gameplay, and the much-awaited release of Larian’s own Mod Manager. This integrated tool allows players to seamlessly browse, install, and manage community-created mods without ever leaving the game environment.
The current modding tools are accessible as a separate application via Steam, enabling modders to craft their own narratives using Larian's proprietary scripting language, Osiris. Mod authors can load custom scripts, perform basic debugging, and publish mods directly from the toolkit.
BG3 Cross-Platform Modding in the Cards
Moreover, as highlighted by PC Gamer, a community-developed "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked"—created by modder Siegfre and available on Nexus—features a comprehensive level editor and re-enables previously restricted features in Larian's editor. This move comes after Larian expressed caution about granting full access to all development tools. "We are a game development company, not a tools company," Vincke told PC Gamer, emphasizing that while players enjoy significant creative freedom, not all development tools would be available for public use.
Vincke also revealed the studio's goal to support cross-platform modding, a feature currently in development. "It's not the easiest thing in the world because we have to make it work on consoles and on PC," he noted. "We'll start with the PC version. The console version will follow later due to additional submission processes, giving us time to address any issues that arise."
In addition to modding enhancements, BG3's Patch 7 has enriched the game with numerous other updates. Players can now enjoy a more refined experience with upgraded UI elements, new animations, additional dialogue options, and a plethora of bug fixes and performance enhancements. As Larian continues to roll out updates, we can anticipate further developments regarding their plans for cross-platform modding.
