Balatro Creator Stands Firm: No Microtransactions or Ads
The creator of Balatro has explained that the lack of microtransactions or ads in his viral poker game stems from a simple, visceral reaction: seeing those elements in other games "makes me want to put my computer in the dishwasher and set it to pots and pans."
"The real reason Balatro has no microtransactions, season passes, ads, or a mountain of DLC isn't purely an ethical stance. It's because when I play games packed with that stuff, it makes me want to put my computer in the dishwasher on the pots and pans cycle," Localthunk stated on Bluesky.
"I understand why developers include those features, but you're sabotaging the user experience if a player's first impression is a bombardment of distractions that have nothing to do with the actual game."
When asked if he was specifically targeting the free-to-play digital card game Marvel Snap, Localthunk clarified: "This isn't solely about them, but I'm not excusing them either. There's about a 95% chance that if a game is free-to-play, its main menu interface is more convoluted than the gameplay UI itself."
Microtransactions remain a contentious issue in gaming, with some developers and publishers facing accusations of exploiting players through predatory in-game stores. Government bodies, like Norway's consumer council, have labeled loot boxes as exploitative, leading to bans in countries like Belgium and the Netherlands. In the U.S., some senators have even called for prohibiting what they term "greedy" in-app purchases following FTC investigations.
Just last week, Activision faced significant backlash after quietly inserting ads into the loadout menus of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone. The company later removed them, stating it was an "erroneously" published "feature test."
Localthunk was also recently forced to publicly reject AI art after a subreddit moderator incorrectly claimed that neither the developer nor publisher Playstack took issue with AI-generated imagery. He went on record to state: "Neither Playstack nor I endorse AI 'art.' I do not use it in my game, and I believe it causes genuine harm to all kinds of artists. This moderator's actions do not reflect the views of Playstack or myself. We have removed this individual from the moderation team."
Balatro is the viral deck-building sensation where you play illegal poker hands, unlock game-changing jokers, and unleash thrilling, over-the-top combos. IGN's Balatro review scored it a 9/10, praising it as: "A deck-building poker roguelike of endlessly satisfying scope, Balatro is the kind of fun that can derail entire weekend plans."
