Virtua Fighter Returns with Updated Engine
Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse into the Future
Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades of dormancy. Developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the footage offers a sneak peek at the game's visual style and combat mechanics.
The last major Virtua Fighter release was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a 2021 remaster. While the new footage isn't actual gameplay, it showcases in-engine graphics, hinting at a visual style blending realism with stylized elements, reminiscent of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The video features Akira, the franchise's iconic character, in updated attire, departing from his classic look.
First shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, the short video depicts a meticulously choreographed fight sequence, highlighting the game's refined combat system. The precision and timing suggest a focus on cinematic presentation.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza series and also involved in the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading development. Details remain scarce, but Sega's commitment to revitalizing the franchise is evident, as expressed by Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The game promises a completely new entry in the series, building anticipation among fans. The return of Virtua Fighter further solidifies the 2020s as a significant era for fighting games.
