Tekken 8 Director Slams Fan Over Anna Williams' New Look: 'Unconstructive and Pointless'
Veteran Tekken 8 fighter Anna Williams is making a comeback, and her revamped look has sparked a range of reactions among fans. While the majority seem to embrace her new design, a vocal minority has expressed dissatisfaction, with some even drawing comparisons to Santa Claus due to her outfit's resemblance to festive attire.
When a fan requested the return of Anna's classic look, Tekken's game director and chief producer, Katsuhiro Harada, responded firmly. "If you prefer the old design, I am not taking those away from you," Harada stated. He emphasized that 98% of fans have welcomed the new design and criticized the complainant for speaking as if they represented all Anna fans. Harada also pointed out the inconsistency in the fan's demands, suggesting that no matter the outcome, the criticism would persist. He described such feedback as "unconstructive, utterly pointless, and, above all, disrespectful to the other Anna fans who are genuinely looking forward to her."
In another exchange, when a user criticized the lack of re-released older Tekken games with modern netcode and mocked Harada's response, the director retorted, "Thank you for POINTLESS reply. You yourself are the joke. MUTED."
Despite the controversy, the general reception to Anna's new look has been positive. Redditor AngryBreadRevolution expressed satisfaction with the new design, appreciating the edgier, vengeful persona it conveys. "Before she was announced I was hoping for an edgier, angry, violent Anna out for revenge for her fiance's death and so I'm quit happy with this design!" they shared. They also noted that while the coat resembles Christmas attire, other elements like the leotard, tights, boots, and gloves were well-received.
Other fans had mixed feelings. Troonpins liked everything except the white feathers, which they felt contributed to the Santa Claus look. Cheap_Ad4756 noted that Anna appears younger and less like a "woman" now, missing the dominatrix vibe from previous designs. Spiralqq was critical of the overall design, feeling it was overdone and lacked a focal point, particularly disliking the coat's resemblance to Santa cosplay.
Amidst these discussions, Tekken 8 has achieved remarkable commercial success, selling 3 million copies within a year of its release. This is a faster pace than its predecessor, Tekken 7, which took a decade to reach 12 million copies worldwide. In IGN's Tekken 8 review, the game was praised for its innovative tweaks to the classic fighting system, enjoyable offline modes, new characters, enhanced training tools, and improved online experience, earning a score of 9/10. The review highlighted how Tekken 8 honors its legacy while pushing forward, making it a standout entry in the series.
