Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatible with Non-GameCube Games, Potential Issues Reported

Nintendo has provided clarity on the compatibility of its newly announced GameCube controller, revealing potential "issues" when using it with modern Nintendo Switch 2 games. The controller was introduced during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, where it was specified that it is "only compatible with Nintendo GameCube" games available in the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, and not with other Switch 2 titles.

In a recent statement, Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is primarily designed for playing GameCube games within the Nintendo Classics collection. They cautioned that while it may be possible to use the controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, players could encounter issues due to the absence of "all the buttons and features" found on more contemporary controllers.

Nintendo emphasized that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system and cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch. "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," Nintendo stated to Nintendo Life.

"Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."
