"Rust Trailer: First Look at Alec Baldwin's Western Film After Tragic Shooting"
The first official trailer for the film Rust, starring Alec Baldwin, has been released. The movie, set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025, marks a somber milestone due to a tragic incident during its production. On October 22, 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot and director Joel Souza injured when a prop gun, handled by Baldwin, discharged unexpectedly. The weapon, believed to be safe and loaded only with blanks, tragically contained a live round.
The official synopsis of Rust unfolds in 1880s Kansas, where young Lucas McCalister (played by Patrick Scott McDermott) inadvertently kills a rancher and faces the gallows. His fate takes a dramatic turn when his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (portrayed by Alec Baldwin), orchestrates a daring jailbreak. Together, they embark on a perilous journey to Mexico, pursued relentlessly by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter known as 'Preacher' (Travis Fimmel).

The aftermath of the tragic event saw Alec Baldwin's charges dropped in April 2023, while Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, responsible for preparing the gun, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. First assistant director David Halls, tasked with ensuring the gun's safety, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of probation.
Rust made its debut at Poland's Camerimage Festival in November 2024, where it paid tribute to Halyna Hutchins during the credits. Although Alec Baldwin was not present, Joel Souza attended and spoke fondly of Hutchins, emphasizing her passion for filmmaking and the significance of celebrating her life and work.
"We are here in a place that she loved so much, probably second only to being on set,” Souza remarked. “I want to thank you all for coming and for taking a few hours out of your day to come celebrate my friend and to celebrate her art and her talent. She really was something.”
