Mastering Car Hotwiring in Project Zomboid: A Comprehensive Guide

Project Zomboid's vast map encourages vehicular exploration. While walking is possible, it's impractical. Luckily, many cars are drivable, and if keys are missing, hotwiring is the solution. This guide details the process and skill requirements.

Hotwiring Mechanics in Project Zomboid

Successfully hotwiring a car allows driving as long as fuel and condition permit, even without keys. However, Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills are needed. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.

Hotwiring Steps:

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Open the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
  3. Select "Hotwire" and wait.

After meeting the prerequisites, follow these steps on any operable vehicle. Hotwiring is automatic; press W to start the engine once complete. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.

Skill Level Progression:

For non-Burglar characters, increase Electrical and Mechanics skills through:

  • Electrical: Dismantling electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
  • Mechanics: Removing and reinstalling mechanical parts.

Books and magazines also grant skill XP, found in homes, shops, mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly award skill XP. Appropriate tools (screwdrivers, etc.) are necessary for dismantling/installation. Right-click vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" for removal.
