Project Mugen Is Now Called Ananta, Devs Drop New Trailer

Remember Project Mugen, the highly anticipated urban open-world RPG from Naked Rain and NetEase? It's officially been renamed Ananta.

First announced at Gamescom in August 2023, the game has finally unveiled a new trailer after a long period of silence. More information is promised on December 5th, but for now, enjoy the official trailer:

Why the Name Change?

The developers haven't yet commented on the reason behind the name change. Interestingly, Ananta means "infinite" in Sanskrit, mirroring the meaning of Mugen (also "infinite"). The Chinese title reinforces this thematic consistency.

The gaming community is divided on the name change, but there's a collective sigh of relief that the project hasn't been cancelled. Comparisons are already being drawn between Ananta and Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually striking, its lack of gameplay footage gives Neverness to Everness a perceived advantage for some players. Personally, I find Ananta's visuals more captivating.

A Curious Turn of Events

Ironically, the Project Mugen team deleted all their original social media accounts, including a YouTube channel boasting over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. While the Discord server remains (simply renamed), the decision to abandon established accounts in favor of a fresh start is puzzling to many.

In Ananta, players assume the role of an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator confronting paranormal threats. The game features characters like Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
