Palworld Criticizes Nintendo

Six months after Palworld's early access launch, its developer reports no official plagiarism complaints from Nintendo. Recall that in January, The Pokémon Company announced an investigation into potential copyright infringement by a competitor, hinting at possible legal action. However, Nintendo appears to have taken no further steps, leaving Palworld's full release later this year unhindered.

Palworld, an open-world monster-collecting game, features creatures called "Pals." Players capture and utilize these Pals in combat, labor, and as mounts. Firearms are integrated into the gameplay, allowing players and their Pals to defend against hostile factions. Pals can be summoned for battles or assigned base tasks like crafting and cooking, each possessing unique Partner Skills. While similarities to the Pokémon series exist in certain mechanics and character designs, Nintendo has seemingly chosen not to pursue the matter.

According to Game File, Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe states he's received no communication from Nintendo or The Pokémon Company, contradicting the Pokémon Company's earlier public statement. Mizobe emphasizes his fondness for and respect for Pokémon, citing it as a significant part of his childhood. Despite the lack of legal action, comparisons between the two games persist, fueled by Palworld's recent Sakurajima update.

In a January blog post, Mizobe also highlighted that Palworld's 100 character designs originated from a 2021 graduate hire, emphasizing her unique contribution to the game's development. The game's unusual blend of monster-catching and firearms has earned it the nickname "Pokémon with guns," propelling its popularity after release. Many players welcomed this open-world monster-catching game, particularly its availability on platforms beyond Nintendo consoles.

Initial Palworld trailers sparked online speculation about its authenticity, largely due to its resemblance to the Pokémon franchise. While Pocketpair suggests a PlayStation release is forthcoming, further console ports remain unannounced.
