"Nintendo Switch 2 Enhances Original Games"

Author : Zachary May 20,2025

The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 has finally arrived, and as previously reported, it's largely backwards compatible with Nintendo Switch 1 games. However, Nintendo has made a notable effort to enhance the gaming experience by introducing specially upgraded versions of Switch 1 games for the Switch 2. These enhancements go beyond simple graphical and framerate improvements, offering players a richer experience.

What Games are Playable on Switch 2?

Nintendo has categorized the games playable on the Switch 2 into three types: native Switch 2 games designed specifically for the new console and not playable on the original Switch, compatible Switch 1 games that can be played natively on the Switch 2 using the same cartridges, and Switch 2 Edition games. These are Switch 1 games that have been enhanced with new features and performance improvements when played on the Switch 2.

This categorization does not include the classic games available through Nintendo Switch Online, which offers a library spanning NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and now GameCube titles.

So What Comes in a Switch 2 Edition Game?

The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct revealed that Nintendo is keen on offering extra content for players who opt for the Switch 2 Edition of a Switch 1 game. For instance, Super Mario Party Jamboree's Switch 2 Edition will include a new feature called Jamboree TV, leveraging the Joy-Con 2's mouse controls, the Switch 2's microphone, and a separately sold USB-C camera.

In addition to upgraded visuals up to 1440p in TV mode and an enhanced frame rate, players can enjoy new minigames and online functionalities. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a cross-gen title, will support mouse controls via Joy-Con 2 and offer multiple display modes, including a Quality Mode at 60fps in 4K when docked or 1080p at 60fps in handheld mode, and a Performance Mode at 120fps in 1080p when docked or 120fps in 720p in handheld mode, all with HDR support.

Other Switch 2 Edition titles, such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land with its Star-Crossed World add-on, will feature new story content. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will integrate additional support for the Zelda Notes service within the Nintendo Switch App, providing guides and game assistance.

Some games, like Pokémon Legends: Z-A, will only receive performance and resolution enhancements as part of their Switch 2 Edition.

When are the Switch 2 Edition Games Coming?

The Switch 2 is slated for release on June 5, 2025, with the first batch of Switch 2 Edition games expected around the same time. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will launch their Switch 2 Editions on the same day as the console. Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV and Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s update will follow on July 24, 2025, and August 28, 2025, respectively. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends: Z-A are scheduled for release sometime in 2025, though specific dates have not yet been announced.

How Much Will Switch 2 Editions Cost?

Pricing for Switch 2 Editions varies based on ownership of the original Switch 1 game. New buyers can purchase the Switch 2 Edition at retail, which will come in a distinctive red-colored physical case, while digital versions will feature a prominent Switch 2 logo.

For those who already own the Switch 1 version and wish to upgrade, Nintendo offers upgrade packs. These can be purchased from select retailers, the official My Nintendo Store, and the Nintendo eShop, though the exact cost of these packs has not been disclosed yet. Notably, some upgrade packs, such as those for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, will be included in a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, which also provides access to online features and the classic game library.
