Nintendo 64 Classic Game Heads to Modern Consoles

Doom 64's Potential Next-Gen Console Debut

Recent updates to ESRB ratings hint at a possible PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S release of Doom 64. This follows the 2020 release of an enhanced version for PS4 and Xbox One, which included graphical improvements and additional content.

The original Doom 64, a Nintendo 64 exclusive, remains a fan favorite. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made official announcements, the updated ESRB listing strongly suggests an imminent release. Historically, ESRB ratings appear shortly before a game launches, making a near-future release date for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions highly probable. This isn't unprecedented; the ESRB previously leaked the re-release of Felix the Cat before its official announcement.

The updated rating notably omits a PC release. However, the 2020 version included a Steam release, and PC players can already experience a Doom 64-like experience through existing mods. Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles further fuels speculation of a similar unannounced launch for Doom 64.

Looking ahead, 2025 promises another exciting entry in the Doom franchise. Doom: The Dark Ages is rumored for a January reveal, with a likely 2025 release. Re-releasing classic titles like Doom 64 provides a perfect bridge to the next chapter in the series, allowing fans to revisit the past while eagerly anticipating the future.
