Harrison Ford: 'Indiana Jones Proves AI Isn't Needed to Capture My Soul'
Harrison Ford, the iconic actor behind the character Indiana Jones, has expressed his satisfaction with Troy Baker's portrayal of the archaeologist in the video game "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle." In a conversation with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Ford humorously remarked, "You don’t need artificial intelligence to steal my soul. You can already do it for nickels and dimes with good ideas and talent." He praised Baker's performance, noting that it was achieved without the use of AI, emphasizing the power of human creativity and skill.
"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" was released in December and is considered an "authentic" addition to the storied franchise, though it may not be part of the official canon. This comes on the heels of the 2023 film "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," which did not receive favorable reviews. Given the positive reception of the game, the creators might be considering further exploration in this direction, potentially moving away from having Ford reprise his role.
Ford, known for his roles in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and upcoming Marvel projects, joins a chorus of creatives expressing concerns about the use of artificial intelligence in media. Filmmaker Tim Burton has called AI-generated art "very disturbing," and actor Nicolas Cage has labeled it a "dead end." Voice actors have also voiced their apprehensions, with Ned Luke from "Grand Theft Auto V" criticizing a chatbot that mimicked his voice, and Doug Cockle, known for "The Witcher," describing AI as "inevitable" but "dangerous" and a threat to their livelihoods.
