Final Fantasy Tactics Creators Fought Division With Resistance
Yasumi Matsuno, the creator and director of Final Fantasy Tactics, has shared insights into the game's origin, explaining that he crafted its story to bring comfort during a time when many felt "robbed of hope."
With the long-rumored Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles finally receiving a release date later this year, Matsuno posted a heartfelt message on X/Twitter stating he is "offering this story once more," almost as if speaking to the widespread unease and division that characterizes 2025.
"Nearly three decades ago, the burst of Japan's bubble economy left financial institutions buried under bad debts, causing a surge in corporate bankruptcies, a sharp increase in unemployment, and a general stagnation across Japanese society. It was a period when hope seemed scarce and the value of dreams was often measured in monetary terms.
"Within that historical context, I wrote a narrative," he continued. "It was the story of Ramza, a young man who persistently fought against a rigid class system. It was also the story of Delita, who aimed to exploit the prevailing confusion and despair to climb the social ladder. It was a tale of intertwined fate, where friendship and betrayal collide.
"Today, in 2025—a time when inequality and division remain deeply embedded in our world—I present this story again. The power to resist rests in your hands."
The Final Fantasy Tactics remaster offers two editions: the beloved original (featuring the War of the Lions translation) and a newly enhanced version with full voice acting, an updated interface, "significant story additions and refinements," and improved visuals. It launches on PS5 and PS5 on September 30, 2025.
