Bungie to Issue Name Change Tokens
Following a recent game update (around August 14th), many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been unexpectedly replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This was attributed to a malfunction in Bungie's name moderation system.
Bungie acknowledged the problem on Twitter (X), stating: "We're tracking an issue where many account names were changed by our Bungie name moderation tool. We're investigating and will provide an update tomorrow, including details on extra name change tokens for everyone."
Bungie's name moderation usually targets usernames violating terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this incident affected numerous players with perfectly acceptable names, some using the same username since 2015.
Bungie's swift response included a series of tweets confirming the widespread nature of the problem and promising a solution. They subsequently announced identifying and fixing the root cause: "The issue causing numerous Bungie name changes has been identified and fixed server-side to prevent further occurrences."
While the immediate problem is resolved, Bungie confirmed their intention to distribute additional name change tokens to all players as compensation. They advised players to remain patient and await further announcements. Affected players can anticipate receiving these tokens and further communication from Bungie shortly.
