Six years after the Avengers disbanded following Thanos' defeat and Tony Stark's death, the world once again requires its mightiest heroes. With new Avengers films slated for 2026 and 2027, the MCU must swiftly reassemble the team. This crucial recruitment process begins in Captain America: Brave New World.

Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore explains the strategic delay in reuniting the Avengers: "We knew if we jumped right back into the Avengers after Endgame, we wouldn't give people a chance to miss it." He highlights Captain America's central role in successful Avengers teams, emphasizing the time needed to establish Sam Wilson as a capable leader after inheriting the mantle. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showcased Wilson's struggles, culminating in his confident embrace of the role in Brave New World. However, a new challenge awaits: leading a new Avengers team.

A promotional clip reveals President Ross (Harrison Ford), succeeding the late William Hurt, tasks Wilson with restarting the Avengers initiative. This might seem contradictory, considering Ross's role in creating the Sokovia Accords, which fractured the team. Director Julius Onah clarifies: "The man we're meeting now is an elder statesman, a diplomat… who sees and understands the errors of his past." Ross's motivation stems from recognizing the Avengers' potential global benefit.

Ross's plan isn't a simple recreation of the original team. Captain America's official government role, established in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, positions a new Avengers team as a branch of the US defense department. Moore explains Ross's strategic reasoning: "He certainly realized that the Avengers left unchecked may not be the best idea… he figures why not do it first before somebody beats me to the punch."

Ross's interest isn't solely driven by future film needs, but likely by the discovery of a world-altering substance: Adamantium, revealed at San Diego Comic Con 2024. The petrified Celestial from Eternals is a source of this super-metal, potentially sparking a global arms race. Securing a superhero team becomes a strategic advantage. Moore states, "Any nation that has a group of Avengers has a leg up."

Sam Wilson's Captain America Journey in the Comics

11 ImagesThe complex relationship between Ross and Wilson is expected to be fraught with tension, given Ross's past actions. Onah emphasizes Wilson's emotional journey and the palpable tension between the two men.

The possibility exists that Ross might favor a different team, potentially the anti-heroes in Thunderbolts, including John Walker. This leaves Wilson free to assemble his own independent team, possibly in time for Avengers: Doomsday. Regardless, Brave New World sets the stage for Wilson's leadership journey. Onah highlights Wilson's empathy as his superpower, enabling effective leadership. Moore adds that Wilson's journey involves questioning his decision, ultimately proving his worthiness.

With only two films between Brave New World and Avengers: Doomsday, Wilson's recruitment efforts will likely span Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps. The assembly of Avengers 2.0 commences here.
