Capcom to Keep Reviving Classic IPs
Capcom has exciting news for fans of classic games, as they plan to bring back beloved IPs, beginning with the Okami and Onimusha series. Dive in to discover more about their strategy and which iconic series could be next in line for a revival.
Capcom Will Continue Reviving Classic IPs
Starting with Okami and Onimusha
Capcom's press release from December 13 unveiled their commitment to revitalizing their classic IPs, with new installments in the Onimusha and Okami series leading the charge. The company is dedicated to delivering top-notch content to gamers by breathing new life into these beloved franchises.
The upcoming Onimusha game, set to launch in 2026, will transport players to the Edo period in Kyoto. Meanwhile, a sequel to Okami is in the works, with the original game's directors and development team at the helm, though its release date remains undisclosed.
“Capcom is focusing on re-activating dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently,” the company stated. “Our goal is to enhance our corporate value by tapping into our extensive library of content, including the revival of past IPs like Onimusha and Okami, to consistently produce high-quality, efficient titles.”
In addition to these revivals, Capcom is actively developing Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both set for release in 2025. Despite focusing on classic IPs, Capcom continues to innovate with new titles such as Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal.
Capcom’s Super Elections Might Reveal Future Titles
In February 2024, Capcom conducted a "Super Election" where fans voted for their favorite characters and desired sequels. The results highlighted a strong demand for sequels and remakes of series like Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire.
Series such as Dino Crisis and Darkstalkers have been largely neglected since their last releases in 1997 and 2003, respectively. Breath of Fire 6, an online RPG, was launched in July 2016 but only lasted until September 2017. These franchises have remained dormant for years and are ripe for a revival or remaster.
While Capcom has not confirmed which IPs they will reactivate next, the "Super Elections" results could offer a glimpse into future projects, as fans also voted for Onimusha and Okami.
