"Breakout Beyond: A Fresh Twist on Atari's Classic"
The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to receive a fresh, modern update with Breakout Beyond, a new take on Atari's classic brick-breaker game. This updated version, while retaining the familiar paddle-and-ball mechanics, introduces a unique sideways progression, moving players from left to right as they break through the bricks.
Developed by Choice Provisions, the creative minds behind the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond enhances the gameplay with dazzling lights and effects that intensify as players build up their combos. The game features special bricks that trigger spectacular effects, such as massive explosions and even a laser cannon, adding an exciting twist to the traditional gameplay.
With 72 meticulously designed levels, Breakout Beyond offers a rich single-player experience. For those seeking endless challenges, an unlockable endless mode is available, complete with an online global leaderboard to showcase your skills. Additionally, the game supports local two-player co-op, ensuring you can enjoy the fun with a friend.
Originally intended as an exclusive title for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development path took a turn when Atari acquired and completed the project. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed excitement about the game, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."
The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 release, has faced numerous delays and setbacks. Despite these challenges, Atari stepped in last year to acquire the Intellivision branding and rights, though not the Amico console itself.
Breakout Beyond is slated for release later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS, ensuring that fans of the classic game can experience this innovative new version on their preferred gaming system.
