ASUS Teases Xbox-Branded Handheld
Gaming hardware giant ASUS has provided an exciting glimpse into what might be the much-talked-about Xbox-branded handheld device. The ASUS Republic of Gamers X/Twitter account shared a teaser featuring its "little robot friend cooking something up," showcasing a Republic of Gamers (ROG) Xbox controller and a handheld system.
Last month, IGN reported on Microsoft’s ambitious plans for video game hardware, including a full next-gen Xbox slated for 2027 and an Xbox-branded gaming handheld expected to launch later in 2025.
The handheld device teased by ASUS prominently features Xbox-specific buttons such as Y, B, A, and X, differing from the PlayStation's triangle, circle, cross, and square, or Nintendo's X, A, B, and Y configurations. Additionally, the device includes a D-pad, two thumbsticks, and four smaller buttons, though these are somewhat obscured in the teaser.
Adding to the excitement, the official Xbox account acknowledged the teaser with a playful wide-eyed gif, hinting at an upcoming reveal.

While specific details such as a reveal date or launch window remain undisclosed, the monitor in the teaser suggests the handheld's key features: "Marathon stamina, more capacity, faster speeds" and a "fresh look!" These points highlight what could be the unique selling propositions of the device.
In January, Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s VP of ‘Next Generation,’ told The Verge about the company's plans to integrate Xbox and Windows experiences for PC gaming handhelds manufactured by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like ASUS, Lenovo, and Razer.
Although this Xbox-branded gaming handheld is not a Microsoft-made console, the company is reportedly gearing up to launch its own in 2027, potentially alongside the next-gen Xbox. Microsoft gaming boss Phil Spencer has indicated that a first-party Xbox handheld is still years away.
The successor to the Xbox Series X is now reportedly in full production and set to launch in two years. This aligns with Xbox president Sarah Bond's recent statement about Microsoft moving "full speed ahead on our next generation hardware," focusing on achieving the most significant technological leap in a generation.
Amidst this, there's been ongoing speculation about the future of gaming consoles. Netflix's President of Games, Alain Tascan, recently suggested a future where gaming relies less on consoles, even as major players like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo continue to innovate. Nintendo's eagerly awaited Switch 2 will be showcased in a Nintendo Direct on April 2, with fans anticipating details on its features, release date, and pre-order management.
