Wind Waker GameCube Version Coming To Switch 2
Nintendo thrilled fans with the announcement during the April 2 Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 that the beloved GameCube version of Wind Waker will be making its way to the new console. This exciting news sparked curiosity about the possibility of Wind Waker HD also being ported to the Switch 2.
Addressing these concerns, Nate Bihldorff, Senior Vice President of Product Development at Nintendo of America, provided clarity. In a conversation with Tim Gettys of Kinda Funny Games Daily, captured during a Switch 2 press event in New York on April 9, Bihldorff emphasized that the availability of the original Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) does not rule out the possibility of a Switch 2 port for Wind Waker HD. Gettys shared, "I did ask if having The Wind Waker on NSO precludes it from the Switch 2 getting the actual Wii U port at some point, and he was very quick to say 'no, all options are on the table'. Obviously, nothing is confirmed one way or another."
First Released in 2002
The original Wind Waker graced the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, captivating players with its unique art style and engaging gameplay. Fast forward to 2013, and Wind Waker HD arrived on the Wii U, bringing with it significant enhancements. These included an upgrade to HD visuals from the original 480p, improved lighting, gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing, and various gameplay adjustments. Given that the GameCube library is exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could provide the only avenue for original Switch owners to experience this upgraded classic.
In other news, the Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries are undergoing a rebranding to "Nintendo Classics." As part of this update, members of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will soon have the opportunity to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on the Nintendo Switch 2, with promises of more titles to come. Additionally, these games will feature in-game options such as a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
