Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Reports

The extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, now taking place in the rugged landscapes of Alaska, has undergone a complete reboot, according to a report by Insider Gaming. Originally codenamed Project Maverick, the game was initially designed as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7. However, after an internal review, the project saw significant changes. Despite receiving positive feedback from both employees and testers, Ubisoft's management made the strategic decision to redirect the majority of resources to Project Blackbird, which is Far Cry 7. The final blow to the multiplayer aspect came with the reassignment of the technical team to other projects.

The project's responsibility has now been transferred to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio known for its expertise in development support. Nearly the entire original development team has been reassigned to focus on the next installment of the Far Cry series.

According to insider Tom Henderson (as of mid-December 2024), Far Cry 7 aims to immerse players in an atmosphere filled with tension and desperation, where time becomes the central adversary. The game's narrative will focus on the protagonist's mission to rescue their family, kidnapped by a mysterious cult involved in terrifying experiments using hallucinogens on both animals and children. Players will be challenged to save their loved ones within a tight 72-hour in-game deadline, translating to 24 real-time hours. This time constraint introduces a pivotal gameplay mechanic, intensifying the urgency and pressure of the game.

A distinctive feature of Far Cry 7 will be a timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, serving as a constant reminder of the ticking clock. This mechanic will not only increase the sense of urgency but also compel players to make rapid, strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 is set to offer a unique gaming experience where every second is critical, and each decision carries significant weight.
