Thunderbolts Teaser Sparks Debate Over Taskmaster's Absence in Key Scene

The latest teaser for Thunderbolts has ignited a fervent debate among Marvel fans regarding the fate of Taskmaster, portrayed by Olga Kurylenko. In the September 2024 trailer, Taskmaster was prominently featured standing between Ghost and U.S. Agent in the Watchtower scene. However, the new teaser conspicuously omits Taskmaster from this same scene, prompting fans to speculate wildly about what this could mean for the character's future.

What happened to Taskmaster?

This omission is further compounded by the recent announcement of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, which included Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman, but notably excluded Kurylenko. This has led many to believe that Taskmaster may not survive the events of Thunderbolts.

The change in the teaser has sparked numerous theories. Some fans think Marvel might be employing a double-bluff tactic, while others suggest the studio is still finalizing its plans for Avengers: Doomsday. Additionally, the slight repositioning of characters in the new teaser has led to speculation that Sentry, known for his ability to 'delete' individuals, might have already eliminated Taskmaster in this scene. Could Sentry have used his powers to remove Taskmaster from existence, leaving the rest of the Thunderbolts unaware? Alternatively, might Taskmaster have turned against the team?

Redditor Matapple13 remarked, "Marvel pretty much just sealed the fate of this character in the movie. Yesterday they announced Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman in the Avengers: Doomsday cast, but Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster's actress) was blatantly absent, and now, Marvel posts this..."

However, not everyone is convinced that Taskmaster's fate is sealed. Puckallday commented, "The amount of people saying she’s dying and Marvel seemingly leaning into that by barely showing her make me think there's a reveal there with her in the movie and that she lives."

PlayThe teaser also emphasizes Sentry's immense power, with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, describing him as "stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one." This statement fuels speculation that Taskmaster might have been easily dispatched by Sentry, possibly sent to the void or another dimension.

As we continue to follow the unfolding developments in the MCU, the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement has raised questions about potential spoilers for Thunderbolts. Yet, Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. have hinted at more cast reveals, leaving room for hope that Taskmaster might still have a role to play in future projects.

We won't have to wait long to find out. Thunderbolts is slated for release in May 2025, followed by the TV show Ironheart in June, and the kickoff of Phase 6 with The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for May 1, 2026, with Secret Wars following in May 2027.
