Take-Two Boss Says It's 'Shown a Willingness to Support Legacy Titles' Amid Questions About the Future of GTA Online Post-GTA 6
The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know
The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their long-standing investment in the game. With GTA Online's continued profitability and popularity, the question of whether Rockstar will abandon the original in favor of a new iteration is paramount. Concerns center around the potential for a "clean break," rendering current progress and in-game purchases obsolete.
This uncertainty prompted IGN to question Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick about the future of GTA Online. While he avoided specifics regarding unannounced projects, Zelnick offered insight by referencing the parallel existence of NBA 2K Online and NBA 2K Online 2. Both titles co-existed successfully, allowing players of the original to continue their engagement without fear of being left behind.
Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles. As an example, we launched NBA 2K Online... and then we launched NBA 2K Online 2... We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market... So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them.”
This suggests that a potential GTA Online 2 wouldn't necessarily replace the original. Continued player engagement in the current GTA Online could lead to its continued support alongside any new iteration.
However, much remains unknown about GTA 6. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more information soon, especially given the proximity of Borderlands 4's September release. Until then, the question of GTA Online's future remains open.
