Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function
A recently published patent suggests the Switch 2 Joy-Cons may offer mouse functionality. This article delves into the new features hinted at by the patent and provides the official schedule for the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
Switch 2: Joy-Con Innovations
Mouse Support Revealed in New Patent
A February 6, 2025, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) publication details a Nintendo patent for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, revealing potential mouse capabilities. This aligns with speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showed the controller being moved across a surface, hinting at this functionality. The patent largely confirms these rumors, offering more detail on Nintendo's plans for the new console's controller.
Joy-Con Mouse Functionality and New Controller Options
The Switch 2 Joy-Cons appear similar to their predecessors, remaining detachable from the console. The key innovation, according to the patent, is their ability to function as a mouse. The patent describes a sensor that detects reflected light from a surface, tracking movement as the Joy-Con is moved across it.
A new charging dock, capable of charging two Joy-Cons simultaneously, is also mentioned. A magnetic attachment, including a wrist strap, is described for connecting the Joy-Cons to the console.
The patent also introduces a new controller design: two separate, half-sized controllers, each with an optical sensor, capable of functioning independently as mice. These can be combined using a separate attachment to form a standard controller.
It's crucial to remember that the patent details may not represent the final product, as Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed these features.
