Director Shawn Levy, known for Deadpool and Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of joining the Star Wars universe, bringing Ryan Gosling along.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy's Star Wars film is in negotiations with Gosling for the lead role. Levy has been developing this project since 2022, with a script finalized last year. He's reuniting with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter for This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy-directed films.

Plot details remain under wraps, including Gosling's character and the film's time period within the Star Wars timeline. However, it's confirmed to be separate from the Skywalker Saga and intended as a standalone film, not part of a trilogy.

The Hollywood Reporter also suggests that Gosling's potential involvement has expedited the project. Levy was previously attached to direct a boy band movie with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. If Gosling signs on, the Star Wars film will reportedly become Levy's next project, commencing production this fall.

Star Wars is currently undergoing a transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its Skeleton Crew series. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed filming in December, slated for release on May 22, 2026. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.

A release date for Levy's Star Wars film is yet to be announced, pending the project's progression. For a comprehensive overview of upcoming Star Wars projects, see our 2025 preview.
