Splitgate, the “Halo-Meets-Portal” Shooter, Announces Sequel
Splitgate 2: The "Halo Meets Portal" Sequel Arrives in 2025
1047 Games, the creators of the popular Splitgate, has announced a sequel, promising a fresh take on the acclaimed arena shooter. Discover what awaits in the Sol Splitgate League.
A 2025 Launch for Splitgate 2
Familiar Foundations, Revolutionary Gameplay
On July 18th, 1047 Games unveiled a cinematic trailer for Splitgate 2. CEO Ian Proulx explained the ambition behind the sequel: to create a game with lasting appeal, designed for a decade or more of play. While inspired by classic arena shooters, the developers aimed to build a modern experience with a deeply satisfying gameplay loop.
Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, elaborated on the evolution of the core mechanic: "We’ve re-evaluated our approach to portals, ensuring mastery is rewarded but victory doesn't hinge solely on portal usage."
Developed using Unreal Engine 5, Splitgate 2 will remain free-to-play and introduce a faction system. While retaining familiar elements, the developers assure players that the sequel will deliver a wholly new experience. The game is slated for release in 2025 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Splitgate, often described as a blend of Halo and Portal, is a PvP arena shooter where players utilize portals for strategic movement. The original game's popularity exploded after a demo garnered 600,000 downloads in a single month. Its early success even led to server outages as the studio scaled capacity to meet demand. Following an extended early access period, the original Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022, before development ceased to focus on this ambitious sequel.
New Factions, Maps, and Characters
The trailer showcases the Sol Splitgate League and introduces three distinct factions, adding significant depth to gameplay. According to the Steam page, each faction offers unique playstyles: Aeros for fast-paced dashes, Meridian for tactical time manipulation, and Sabrask for aggressive, powerful combat.
While details remain scarce, the developers have confirmed that Splitgate 2 will not adopt a hero shooter model like Overwatch or Valorant.
Gameplay specifics will be revealed at Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), but the trailer already hints at exciting features. The developers emphasize the trailer's accuracy, confirming the showcased maps, weapons, portal trails, and the return of dual wielding.
A Mobile Companion App and Deep Lore
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will allow players to explore the game's lore through comics, collect character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
