PlayStation 5 Price Hike Announced for U.S. Market
Sony has announced a $50 price increase for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, and PlayStation 5 Pro, effective tomorrow, August 21, in the United States.
The standard PS5 with a disc drive will now cost $549.99, marking a $50 rise. The PS5 Digital Edition will also see a $50 increase, bringing its price to $499.99. Meanwhile, the PS5 Pro will be priced at $749.99, up by the same amount.
"Like many global companies, we are operating in a challenging economic climate," stated Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, in a brief announcement. "Consequently, we have made the difficult decision to raise the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S., effective August 21."
The price adjustment comes during a period of volatility in global markets, influenced by U.S. tariffs and similar moves from other gaming firms, such as Nintendo's recent price hike for the original Nintendo Switch.
Earlier this year, Sony had already increased PS5 prices in the UK, mainland Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, following a previous adjustment in 2022.
In related news, Microsoft sparked curiosity today by not disclosing a price for the ROG Xbox Ally X upon announcing its release date. Asus, the device's manufacturer, told IGN that more time was needed to assess the current "macro-economic" conditions before setting a price for the gaming handheld.
Sony confirmed no additional changes today for PlayStation 5 accessories or consoles in other regions.
