HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 will bring back content cut from the original The Last of Us Part II video game, according to showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann. Druckmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that some “pretty brutal” scenes will be revived, including elements from the game’s “Lost Levels,” partially restored in the PlayStation 5 remaster. These levels, including Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers, offer varied tones—from the relatively calm scenes of Ellie at a party or tracking a boar, to the intense horror of her being stalked in the Seattle tunnels.

The restored content promises intense viewing. Druckmann described it as "pretty brutal," adding that he's excited for audiences to see it. He also hinted at a “pretty prominent” character, only mentioned in the game, making an appearance, similar to the Season 1 inclusion of Frank.

Season 2 introduces a significant cast expansion, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel, among others. Catherine O’Hara joins in a currently undisclosed role.

With Season 2’s premiere slated for April, answers to many mysteries are imminent. However, some questions may remain unanswered for longer. Unlike the first season, which covered the entirety of the original game, HBO plans to extend the adaptation of The Last of Us Part II beyond a single season.

Showrunner Craig Mazin previously stated that Part II contains a vast amount of story material. While a Season 3 renewal is pending, Season 2 is structured with a “natural breakpoint” after seven episodes.
