PSN Accounts for Playstation's PC Ports No Longer Required (For Some Games)
Sony's PlayStation Network (PSN) account requirement for some PC ports is changing. Starting after the January 30, 2025 release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC, PSN accounts will become optional for several titles.
Games Affected:
This change affects Marvel's Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and the upcoming PC release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered (April 2025). However, games like Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Until Dawn will still require PSN accounts.
Incentives for PSN Users:
While PSN is no longer mandatory, Sony is offering incentives for players who choose to link their accounts: trophies, friend management, and in-game bonuses. These include:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Early unlock suits.
- God of War Ragnarök: The Armor of the Black Bear and a resource bundle.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points and a skin for Ellie.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Access to the Nora Valiant outfit.
Further incentives are promised.
Past Backlash and Implications:
Sony faced criticism in 2024 for requiring PSN accounts for games like Helldivers 2, leading to its delisting in many countries lacking PSN support. Similar negative feedback followed the God of War Ragnarök PC port. The limited PSN availability (70+ countries) remains a concern, forcing players in unsupported regions to use workarounds.
This shift towards optional PSN accounts suggests Sony is responding to player feedback and adapting its PC strategy. The long-term implications for future PC ports remain to be seen.
