PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)

The PS5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is unlikely to last.

The scarcity stems partly from the PS5 Pro's release. Unlike the standard PS5, the Pro lacks a disc drive option, forcing users who want both the Pro's enhanced capabilities and physical media playback to purchase the drive separately. This increased demand, coupled with the previously released PS5 Digital Edition (also lacking a disc drive), has fueled the ongoing shortage.

While Amazon and PlayStation Direct are currently selling the drive at its MSRP of $79.99, availability is limited. PlayStation Direct, in particular, restricts purchases to one per customer to deter scalpers. A third-party Walmart seller offers the drive, but at a significantly inflated price ($122) and with extremely limited stock. Major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy remain out of stock. A similar shortage has also impacted the UK market since late 2024.
