Mastering the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide

Nothing is more satisfying in an action RPG than perfectly deflecting an enemy's attack. This guide will walk you through unlocking and utilizing the parry mechanic in Avowed.

Unlocking the Parry Ability

Before you can parry, you must unlock the ability. Navigate to the Abilities menu, then select the Ranger tab. The Parry ability is located in the top middle column. You'll need to allocate an Ability point to any of the three core skill trees to unlock it. Parry has three ranks:

Rank Player Level Requirement Description
1 N/A (1 Point Spent) Unlocks the Parry ability.
2 Player Level 5 Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, enhancing stun.
3 Player Level 8 Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, enhancing stun.

At level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," allowing you to parry projectiles.

Executing a Parry

Parrying in Avowed

A critical moment before a potential bear encounter.

Parrying requires precise timing. Block immediately before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue confirm a successful parry, staggering your opponent. The timing varies slightly between enemies, so practice is key. It's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Limitations of Parrying

Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle require dodging. Furthermore, only melee weapons (one-handed or two-handed, not in your off-hand) and shields (in your off-hand) can parry. Ranged weapons and grimoires cannot be used to parry.

Benefits of Parrying

Parrying stuns enemies, creating an opening for significant damage. It's a defensive and offensive technique ideal for melee-focused builds. However, ranged builds may find it less useful. Avowed offers easy respeccing, allowing you to adjust your skills if needed.
