Palworld PS5 Release Sans Japan: Nintendo Lawsuit Implicated
Palworld, showcased at PlayStation's September 2024 State of Play, is now available on PS5, following its Xbox and PC releases. However, a significant exception exists: the game's Japanese PS5 launch is indefinitely delayed due to legal issues.
Palworld's PlayStation 5 Debut: A Global Launch, Except Japan
State of Play Announcement and Horizon Forbidden West Collaboration
The PS5 version of Palworld launched globally as announced during the PlayStation State of Play event. Sony even highlighted a collaboration, featuring Palworld characters equipped with gear inspired by Horizon Forbidden West's Aloy.
Despite the global launch, Japanese PlayStation players are currently unable to access the game. This delay stems from a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Nintendo and Pokémon against Pocketpair, Palworld's developer.
Japan Release Date: Uncertain Future for Palworld on PS5
Palworld's Japanese Twitter (X) account addressed the situation, confirming the worldwide release (excluding Japan) and apologizing to Japanese fans. They stated that a Japanese release date remains undetermined. The statement emphasized their commitment to bringing the game to all PS5 users as soon as possible.
While Pocketpair hasn't explicitly linked the delay to the legal battle, the timing strongly suggests a connection. Nintendo's recently filed lawsuit in Tokyo District Court seeks injunctions and damages, potentially leading to the game's shutdown if the injunction is granted. This legal action casts a significant shadow over Palworld's future in Japan.
