Osmos Returns to Google Play
Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, developer Hemisphere Games has resurrected it with a completely revamped port.
For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning puzzle where you absorb smaller organisms while evading larger ones. Its simple yet engaging premise made it a hit, but Android users were left in the dark for years.
Now, this classic, initially released in 2010, is back on Google Play, optimized for modern Android devices. Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that the original Android version, developed with Apportable, became impossible to update after Apportable's closure. The game's removal was necessary as it only functioned on obsolete 32-bit systems. This new release rectifies that.
A Cellular Masterpiece
If you need further convincing, the gameplay trailer (above) showcases Osmos' captivating mechanics. Its influence is evident in many subsequent puzzle games. Its pre-social media release is almost a missed opportunity; its gameplay would likely be viral on platforms like TikTok.
Osmos feels like a nostalgic trip back to a time of boundless mobile gaming innovation. While many excellent mobile puzzle games exist, Osmos' unique charm and elegant design remain unparalleled.
