Okami 2 Officially Announced as Sequel, Development Underway
The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, finally has some concrete details. While specifics remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads revealed crucial information. The sequel is indeed a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline.
Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel's narrative connection to the first game. Director Hideki Kamiya playfully hinted at Amaterasu's return, a confirmation later provided by Hirabayashi.
While not surprising to fans, the sequel's existence raises questions about the Nintendo DS prequel, Ōkamiden, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Ōkamiden received mixed reviews, partly due to its platform and the absence of key original team members. Hirabayashi acknowledged the existing fan base and the varied feedback regarding Ōkamiden's narrative, emphasizing that the new sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's story.
Ōkami's ending inherently suggests a sequel, leaving Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey, ripe with potential conflict and adventure.
However, further details are currently unavailable. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, explaining the early announcement as a result of their excitement. Hirabayashi indicated that substantial updates might be some time coming.
