Nintendo Switch 2: Size Unveiled

The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer immediately reveals a significant size increase compared to its predecessor. As the original Joy-Cons detach, the tablet section visibly expands, showcasing a substantial upgrade. This suggests a departure from Nintendo's traditionally pocket-friendly handhelds, embracing the larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.

While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, we can estimate based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we handled a Switch 2 mock-up by peripheral maker Genki. Though unverified then, Nintendo's trailer confirms remarkable similarity to the mock-up, making our CES measurements a likely accurate prediction.

So, how big is the Switch 2? Let's explore our estimations:

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

We estimate an 8-inch screen (diagonal measurement, excluding bezels), aligning with earlier 2024 rumors. This translates to approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall. This represents a nearly 30% diagonal increase and a 66% larger area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch display. The Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen is 45% smaller diagonally and 111% smaller in area; the Switch OLED's 7-inch screen is 14% smaller diagonally and 30% smaller in area. While larger isn't always better, a high-quality 8-inch display promises a significant visual improvement.

The Steam Deck, with its 7-inch (original) and 7.4-inch (OLED) displays, offers a size comparison. The Switch 2's estimated 8-inch screen surpasses even the larger Steam Deck OLED by 8% diagonally and 11% in area.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

The larger screen necessitates a larger console. Our CES measurements of the Genki mock-up, corroborated by trailer analysis, suggest a Switch 2 size of approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall. This is roughly 25% larger than the original Switch (239mm x 102mm), 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm), and 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). Depth appears similar to the original Switch.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The trailer suggests Joy-Cons of similar width, but increased height. Our estimations point to 32mm wide and 115mm tall, a 13% increase over the originals.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

Subtracting Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the screen unit at 200mm long and 115mm tall, approximately 31% larger than the original. This allows for approximately 11mm side bezels and 8mm top/bottom bezels.

These measurements are estimations. While based on the Genki mock-up and trailer analysis, official dimensions may differ. However, we anticipate a console roughly 25% larger than the original Switch.
