Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: A Potential Mouse Mode?

Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel functionality: acting as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of such a control scheme by game developers remains uncertain, the possibility aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

This intriguing possibility stems from Vietnamese customs data obtained by Famiboards user LiC, who has previously unearthed valuable information regarding a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data, a source of numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024, recently revealed references to polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." The use of "mouse soles," a term typically associated with computer mice, strongly suggests a potential mouse-like functionality for the upcoming console.

LiC's findings include two "mouse sole" model numbers: LG7 and SML7. These designations haven't been found in public component databases, hinting at unreleased, proprietary components. The reported size of these 90 x 90mm square tape pieces suggests they're designed to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handhelds

While a mouse-like controller mode is consistent with Nintendo's experimental approach, it's not unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features a similar capability with its right controller, transformable into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to enhance its functionality as a mouse.

The Legion GO also boasts magnetic rails for controller attachment, a feature rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity offers a potential preview of Nintendo's upcoming hybrid console.
