Ninja Gaiden 4 Was the Surprise Reveal at Xbox Developer Direct 2025
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a surprise: the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4 and a remake, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja."
This marks the return of the mainline Ninja Gaiden series after a 13-year hiatus. Developed collaboratively by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 directly follows Ninja Gaiden 3, promising the series' signature blend of brutally challenging yet rewarding gameplay. The collaboration isn't surprising, given Xbox's long-standing relationship with Team Ninja.
A New Protagonist Takes Center Stage
Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to become a Master Ninja. PlatinumGames' Art Director, Tomoko Nishii, explains Yakumo's design: "to be someone who can stand alongside Ryu, the pinnacle of what it means to be a ninja." While Yakumo is the main protagonist, Ryu Hayabusa remains a crucial part of the story, serving as a significant challenge and mentor for Yakumo. Ryu Hayabusa will also be playable.
Revitalized Combat
The game maintains the series' signature fast-paced, brutal combat. Yakumo utilizes two distinct fighting styles: Raven Style and the new Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style. Team Ninja's Director, Masazaku Hirayama, assures fans that despite the new styles, the action will feel authentically Ninja Gaiden. PlatinumGames' influence is evident in the increased speed and dynamic combat.
The game is nearing completion (70-80% finished), currently in the polishing phase. Further details will be revealed soon.
Release Date and Availability
Ninja Gaiden 4 launches in Fall 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remake for the Modern Era
A remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 title, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and is included with Xbox Game Pass. This version features additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2: Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel.
